So it is back to street photography. I don’t think it is because I’m back using the Leica, but black and white photography just very naturaly works very well with this type of photography.
Now, let me crush one illusion you might have looking at that picture. Let me crush the illusion of the “decisive moment”. You might look at the shot and think: “Hey, cleverly done, I like how the contrast between the two proud young man and the old, hunched figure has been captured. That’s some decisive moment you caught here!”
Well, I’m sorry to disappoint here. If you look a bit closer at the shot, you see that the focus is on the two men. Let me admit, that this is also, where my mental focus was when I took the shot. I only realized the old man in my shot when I was back home looking at the photos had taken. The moment, when I pressed the shutter, I wasn’t even aware of him being there.
This shot is one of these happy concidences you get when you go out and do street photography. You take shot after shot. Most of them are crap. Some are ok and sometimes you get lucky. I admit, I got lucky here.
I would be proud of the shot if I would have seen the scene, seen the contrast between the figures and decided to press the shutter – NOW. But I didn’t. And that’s why this shot is shown here on the blog and not the in the showcase 🙂
You might be young, strong and walk proud. Just remember that time goes by and one day, your back will bend and your stride gets slower and shorter.
