Of course I continue trying to capture Christmas and city lights in black and white. But it is quite a challenge as these city blue hour shots have a very nice color scheme and it is really hard to get a shot that works well in black and white as well.

I actually like how this shot turned out quite a bit. The only caveat is that I didn’t take it with the Monochrom but converted it into black and white later on the computer. We’ve had some rain that night and so I decided to take the Sony A7 together with the kit zoom with me to work and try to get a good shot of the christmas decoration we have there.

Of course it turned out I need a wider lens, the shots I took inside the court just didn’t turn out well. I wanted a shot that shows the christmas tree and the deep blue sky just before sunrise and the 28mm that the kit lens has at its widest just wasn’t enough. I went back there on Saturday to take shots with the OM-D and the 12 – 40mm zoom (which is equivalent to a 24 – 80mm) and it looks like 24 mm is just about the right focal length. Which isn’t a surprise as i liked that focal length for landscape shots very much on my Kyrgyzstan trip.

Oh, and just for comparison sake, you’ll find the color version below. Which, I have to say, I like a lot too!

And again we see that blue tones and warm yellow / orange just work very well in a color photo
